Phases of an Interior Design Project: What to Expect and When to Expect It

Have you ever wondered what goes into an interior design project? Maybe what it looks like or how long it takes—or maybe how your designer creates something you love (because how is that level of mind-reading even possible). Well, it’s all wrapped up in the many phases of an interior design project.

Each project is given the same attention to detail and focus on quality, functionality, and ambiance—the goal is to create a room, home, or space into somewhere you feel good being at or living in.

Phases of Your Interior Design Project

While I can’t speak for every interior designer, I can speak for my own process. When you work with Ravenhouse Design, there are four main phases of your interior design project: Consultation, Proposal, Design, and Installation.

Each phase has a general timeline, but the time to completion is determined by your specific project—which we’ll talk a little bit about as we cover each phase.

Phase #1: Consultation

Timeline: 30 Minutes

The first phase of your project is a detailed consultation. We’ll do this over the phone or in person, depending on your needs. For example, we’ll consider your location, whether you’re commercial or residential, and the size of your project (whether it’s one room or your whole house).

During the consultation phase, we’ll begin to understand your style and project requirements, which we’ll use to complete the next phase.

Phase #2: Proposal

Timeline: Within a week of your consultation

After your consultation, you’ll receive your proposal. Your proposal is a personalized presentation that outlines our services and the cost of your design. Once you’ve approved your proposal, we’ll move into the next phase: design.

Phase #3: Design

Timeline: Depends on project scope, but averages around 4-6 weeks

The design phase is when we’ll do what I consider the second most important phase of the project (the first is getting to know you and what you love—and don’t): designing your space(s). We’ll plan out every last detail to ensure the space both looks and feels good.

Phase #4: Install

Timeline: 3-4 months after your initial design, but it could be more or less (there are truly so many factors at play here to have an exact timeframe)

Installation is probably our client’s favorite phase; it’s when your designs are brought to life! During this phase, your rooms have been updated, construction is complete, furniture is placed, and every piece of local art is carefully hung.

When we’re finished, you’ll walk into your new, fully completed space!

Planning Your Interior Design Project

Megan from Ravenhouse Design, Arizona Based Interior Designer

These four phases of your interior design project each do a little bit (or a lot) more behind the scenes. For example, when we source your materials for the design or the meticulous measurements to make sure you’re getting the most out of your space for the best functionality.

There’s also the pre-project phase when you recognize the need for an interior designer and the spaces you want done—and when you officially “book the call” or consult.

And if you’re ready to move to the first official phase of your interior design project, book your consult and create a home you love.
